Choosing Your Next Carry-on Luggage

Choosing Your Next Carry-on Luggage

A good carry-on luggage is every traveler's must-have. It is the bag that will house your on-flight essentials – an additional set of clothes, skincare, and snacks for some. It is the beginning of our holiday trip, and no expense should be spared when it comes to picking the right suitcase. Below is a succinct list of essential criteria to help you make the best-informed decision for your next on-board travel companion.

1. GO HARD

Hard-cased luggage provides a protective shield against bumps and compressions from the front and stability for us to wheel more effortlessly. Compared with soft/fabric carry-on suitcases, hard cases can take on more weight without changing the bag’s shape or causing any sagging that could lead to rips and tears. Additionally, they give us the option to check in our luggage without worrying that the next case will squish all our belongings.

2. HANDLE

Perhaps one of the most overlooked criteria when choosing your luggage of any size is the top-held trolley handle. Most of the time, that is the first thing that gives way because of the load it has to bear when you wheel/carry your luggage. How wide the distance between each of the trolley's spine sits away from one another will determine how much support the traveler has to give to push/pull. A wider handle allows more equal weight distribution, empowering you to glide your baggage more effortlessly. Opt for one that is broader so that less effort is required from you to wheel your luggage around.

3. WHEELS

You would be surprised but in this day and age, bi-directional wheels still exist for luggage. Opt for luggage that has 360deg wheels. Other than the ease of maneuverability and better weight distribution, flexible wheels are more adapted to different terrains.

4. WATCH THE WEIGHT

Every gram counts when you are on air, so this is when being light is encouraged. A good checked luggage when empty should weigh around 3-4kg while a carry-on averages around 1-2kg, empty. If you can find any that are even lighter, go for it. The lighter it is, the more you can carry. Bear in mind that even with lightness, there needs to be durability. There are far too many manufacturers sacrificing durability to produce lighter luggage.

The list can go on, but as a baseline (and not to overwhelm), the above 4 are what you should keenly look for when finding your next luggage.
